This is the second oldest purpose-built museum in the country. It occupies a gracious russet brick building in an enclosed meadow close to what remains of the town's 12th century castle. The museum first opened its doors to the general public in 1835, and since this time it has continued to delight and surprise numerous visitors with its collections and rich historic displays.
The museum has galleries showing dolls and toys, ceramics, glass, furniture, textiles and costume. There are frequently changing art exhibitions, and much to do with local history and archaeology.
There is a gallery devoted to the natural history of the region, and a delightful informative Ancient Egyptian Room.
Saffron Walden Museum has something for everyone, afterwards you can even enjoy a picnic in the grounds.
The museum welcomes disabled visitors and there is a shop for souvenirs.
Charges are minimal - £1.00 for adults, children under 18 are admitted free and concessions 50p.
